چکیده

Combining neuroscience and chemical engineering, researchers at Stanford have developed a process that renders a mouse brain transparent. The postmortem brain remains whole — not sliced or sectioned in any way — with its three-dimensional complexity of fine wiring and molecular structures completely intact and able to be measured and probed at will with visible light and chemicals. The process, called CLARITY, ushers in an entirely new era of whole-organ imaging that stands to fundamentally change our scientific understanding of the most important but least understood of organs, the brain, and potentially other organs, as well. The process See brAiN, page 4

Micro-Model Experimental Study of Fracture Geometrical Effect on Breakthrough Time in Miscible Displacement Process

The miscible displacement process appears to be an increasingly feasible method for the extraction of oil from depleted reservoirs. How‌ever, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of how fracture geometrical characteristics impact the oil recovery efficiency in this type of enhanced oil recovery technique. In this work, a series of experimental tests were conducted whereby the n-Hept...

O 27: Traumatic Brain Injury and Inflammation

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health concern in our country, because of placing in top three most common causes of death and substantial direct and indirect costs to society. The incidence of TBI in our country is 1.7 times of international incidence. Traumatic brain injury induced by primary and secondary mechanisms that give rise to death and neurologic morbidity in pat...

MeCP2 in neurons: closing in on the causes of Rett syndrome.

The discovery in 1999 that Rett syndrome (RTT) is caused by mutations in a gene encoding the methyl-CpG-binding repressor protein MECP2 provided a significant breakthrough in the understanding of this devastating disease. The subsequent production of Mecp2 knockout mice 2 years later provided an experimental resource to better understand how mutations in the MECP2 gene result in RTT. This paper...
